Home Stagers - Name Your Favorite Accessory

I was asked recently by an editor for the AJC if I had a favorite decorate item that I like to use in the homes I stage. My initial thought was apples; green ones to be more specific.  However, I noticed recently that in addition to my "green apples" I love using orchids. For me, orchids add a level of sophistication and elegance yet.

Here are a few pictures of the orchids I've used in staging:

Notice the green apples right beyond the orchid? (smile)

Home Stagers - Do you have an accessory item that you find you use often?  I would love to see it (or them) so be sure to post some pics.

Kathy

When this questions was asked previously I believe that I said glassware, now I can no longer pick a favorite.  I love so much of everything.  I too have an affinity for green apples and orchids and I seem to use both somewhere in every staging.

Hi Kathy,  What a fun discussion!  I love the orchids you selected.  My favorite and one of the most versitle accessories is books.  We use hardcover books without the paper covers on them and look for great colors and unoffensive titles.  People do notice the titles!

Kathy: My favorite accessory are small 8" red/orange orchids in little mossy pots. They are great for adding a pop of color on side tables, in book shelves and bathroom counters. I think I own 3 or 4 dozen of them.

I also like green apples and don't let's forget artichokes. I have a ton of them too!

Along with orchids, we have a bromeliad that I just love, and seem to find all sorts of places for. We also have a great gold glass piece that we've used over and over. The funny thing about that one is that the friends whose home we bought it for hated it, so now we call it "the piece K & M hated." I'm sure they'd be honored...

We love orchids as well, along with artichokes--we do have this one plant that is grass in a stone container--it looks almost like you could see two eyes in the stone, and since the grass is cut even on top it looks like hair--so we lovingly refer to it as "Wilson".  "Wilson" can always be found on one of our many ladder shelves....we have found that those help fill a space without hanging something, plus help fill in the idea of a reading nook, study, possible office, etc.

Hello all, I l use pears ---- silver ones, yellow ones, orangey ones , stack them in clear glass vases---

A fellow stager lent me a very large pear picture for a home we worked on togethre---- I love it so--- but she won't sell it to me!  I have searched everywhere for a similar one ---- but no luck I have pear dishes and I need a similar large picture for a show home I am doing---  Any advice where I could find one.

I am really partial to vases! They come in so many shapes, sizes, styles, colors. I can't get enough of them!

Ginger - I too like using glassware.

Diana - books are definitely one of the most versatile items we use.  You can use them in so many places and in so many ways.

Michele - I would love to see a picture of those little moss covered little flowering orchids. It sounds like a must-have item for my inventory. I too love using artichokes.

Laurie - Bromeliads are those flowers from Hawaii; right?  And funny how you've name it "the piece K&M hated."

Julie & Amy - I think I own a Wilson (smile).

Marilyn - you should post a picture of that pear print and see if anyone in the rain has that item.  Perhaps they might even sell it.  I have a pear picture (actually 4 or 5) and who knows, it could be the one you love.

Cathy - there can never be too many orchids.

Peg - I love vases too.

Love your orchid shots Kathy!  I have several "favorite" accessories.  Hard to choose just one.  I guess one of my "signature pieces" happens to be a glass container of some type with clothes pins placed in it.  I sneak them in laundry rooms all around town, both vacant and occupied homes.  Seems to always draw positive comments.  Fun post to see what others like to stage with too!

so many to choose from . . . hmmm . . .  I can't decide.  Problably all greenery.  I couldn't do a job without it.  Nice post, Kathy.

Red bromeliad  Kathy, Here's a picture of our bromeliad. I don't know if they come from Hawaii, but they do grow happily here in Florida - outside, even!

I love orchids to and use them in almost every property, but I have to say my favorite "accessory" are glass canisters - because you can fill them with anything.  Here are a few picks, enjoy!

I was just explaining to someone over the weekend that my favorite accessory in Staging are these twine balls that I purchased from one of my wholesalers. I have them in three sizes. My last assistant joked that I used them so often, I should incorporate them into my logo!  I just can't help it, they are so versatile.

Kathy,

I have a few favorites. First is my round seagrass ottoman. I get asked alot if it is for sale. No way! I also love green apples (they go in every staging) and also my white artichoke.

Hmmm..  As I think back to past jobs, and try to see if there may be a theme running through them.. I guess I'd have to say that almost anything that feels "organic".. Fruit ( I love the little reddish pink "lady" aapples, green apples , pears,, ),, One of my favorites is bunches of hydrangeas,,  I love the muted pallette and the way they can fill a space. ..AND pots!.. any kind of round shape I guess.. to contrast with the "squareness" and hard edges of most architecture.

I am not a home stager, but I wanted to comment about a staged home I showed Buyers. This home stager had her brochures and business cards prominently displayed -- I guess to attract Realtor business. Anyway, she had books on the fireplace mantel, and one included was written by Rush Limbaugh -- horrible choice, IMHO.

Two things, some black iron candle holders ( I bought a case of them), and a couple of ceramic birds, one blueish, and one brownish.  My asstistant always trys to hide the bird, she always says, No, you are not using that bird.  So I've kinda put them in retirement.

Michelle - I love the idea of the clothes pins in a glass container.  I saw that once in a magazine and had forgotten about it.

Karen - I hear you on the use of greenery.  I have bags of loose greens and those that are already in containers.

Laurie - thanks for coming back and adding that picture.  I love those plants.

Connie - your glass containers look awesome!

Tori - I use those wicker balls a lot.  In fact, I used them today.

Anthea - LOVE that white artichoke.  I've never seen anything like it.  Do you mind me asking where you purchased it?

Anne - you have lots of favorites.  Good for you!

Lori - What an odd book to place out on a mantel.

Cindy - I can just picture your assistant hiding that bird. Too funny.

Kathy,

I think I found it at HomeGoods. I just love that store!

Hmmmmm, well I would say orchids for sure in every home. But then I love green apples and yes, I do use red pomegranates when using red tones. Ahhhh. I can't decide ;))

Do you only use silk or artificial plants when staging?  I love the look of greenery in a home but we do a lot of vacant homes and there is no one to take care of them.....if you use real ones, do you have any favorites that survive being ignored?

Posted by Maribeth almost 3 years ago

Maribeth - I wish I could say that I only use real plants.  However, a) I can't grow an orchid for the life of me and b) I don't want the agent or seller responsible for caring for them.  So, to answer your question - they are artificial.

Hi Kathy I am with you...LOVE THE ORCHIDS and LOVE THE GREEN APPLES. I love large decorative vases as well. As always you always do a beautiful job with your homes. Thank you for all your nice comments on my homes as well. I appreciate you featuring them as well.

I have not read through many blogs lately and decided to do so tonight and have to say that I am disappointed that MOST stagers blog about things that have nothing to do with staging. I also do not see many before and afters.

I have a link to AR on my website that says TO VIEW OUR LATEST PROJECTS CLICK ON OUR BLOG. This has helped tremendously when new clients call because they can see that for one we are working daily and then they get to see updated photos. I have also found that they can relate to one situation or another. I thought more stagers would take advantage of this site to showcase their work

I always click to your site and alway love everything I see, continued success

Have a blessed weekend, Phyllis
